SoapBox Public Speaking Competition held its 2012 event at Thomas Telford School Telford Shropshire on Saturday 28thJanuary, Teams from Lichfield, Cannock Chase and Barton-under-Needwood met with local teams from Madeley Academy and the host school to compete.
The standard and enthusiasm was high and all the competitors had prepared well. Judges were Mr. Don Nixon former Assistant Director of Education and Mr Caspar Bieneck, Inernational Business and Communications Manager and both were very impressed indeed with the standard of performance and topics chosen. Many of the younger students entering the competition at intermediate level were speaking in Public for the first time. They were encouraged and supported by teams in the Senior section who spoke with authority on a wide range of topical subjects.

Compere and organiser Marina Jones said she hoped to continue the venture and recruit more schools and colleges into taking part. Sounds Right offers training for schools new to such competitions and the organisers hope to secure business sponsorship to develop Spoken English events in the region.
Schools are under monumental pressure at the moment but the development of Speaking Skills cannot be neglected. Sounds Right offers specialist training in Speech where tutors will work with students and staff to transmit relevant skills and help with preparation and performance - not only for competitions such a SoapBox but for all Speaking events and for interviews for University and for employment.
